Anchoring Bias: The Pitfall of Fixating on Highs and How to Respond

The moment an initial price or all-time high becomes your mental anchor is when judgment locks in.

A single red line on the chart and the thought "I should have bought here" starts to run the show.

You have felt memory and emotion move before your account balance does.

Retail trader:

"If I had sold then I would have made 50%..."

That is anchoring.

What is anchoring?

Anchoring is the bias of fixating on the first-seen or salient number when making judgments.

Humans create rationalizations around a single reference point.

In investing, that reference often becomes the all-time high or the initial buy price.

Why is this a problem?

Using the high as the reference hides current value.

Past numbers end up dominating decisions instead of actual company fundamentals.

As a result, stops are missed and reckless averaging down repeats.

What does behavioral economics say?

Early experiments showed people were strongly influenced even by arbitrary numbers.

The psychological weight of a number often outweighs its informational value.

This is particularly damaging for investors.

How do you notice this in practice?

Watch the first sentence that comes to mind before and after opening a chart.

If "I should have bought here" is your first thought, that is an anchoring signal.

It helps to write your target and stop loss before the trade.

Leave a note, one line on why you entered at this price.

Common everyday traps

Friends' performance or YouTube top earnings raise your personal benchmark.

Media-exposed highs often become a collective anchor.

Retail trader:

"Everyone else bought, so I missed out?"

Following that feeling triggers other biases.

So, where do you start?

→ 1. One-line pre-trade rule: write entry reason and stop loss in one line.

→ 2. No first-impression rule: impose a 1-minute ban on judging past prices when you open a chart.

→ 3. Portfolio review: update assessment using current value (returns, dividends, risk).

This is for reference only.
