Keep a Trading Journal, Record Losses, and Avoid Success Bias, Why It Matters

People naturally remember wins and quickly forget losses.

This becomes a problem in practice because it prevents building repeatable behavior.

Retail trader: "It was luck this time, I will do better next time?" That is not correct.

You must separate luck from rules.

What is success bias?

Success bias means the brain remembers only successes and forgets failures.

People attach reasons to good outcomes and blame external factors for bad ones.

In investing, this leads to overrating returns.

What to write in a trading journal so it is useful?

Time: record trade time and holding period.

Psychology: one line for emotions at entry and exit.

Strategy rationale: one line for the reason, one line for the assumption.

This lets you later test why something worked.

What questions to ask during a review?

Ask about the process, not just the result.

Why did I enter? What was the assumption? Did the assumption break?

Finding patterns through these questions is the key.

Common traps?

Selective memory: detailing winning trades but skimming losses.

Success-bias feedback loop: sharing only wins inflates confidence.

Break this by mandating loss records.

Easy signals to notice?

Repeating items: repeated profits/losses from the same rationale suggest a broken rule.

Emotion score: anxiety or certainty scores before entry reveal patterns.

Look at expected value rather than win rate, because high win rate alone is vulnerable to failures.

So where do you start?

→ 1. Create a trading-journal template starting today, one line: goal, entry, stop, emotion.

→ 2. Set a weekly review rule, one line: with 10 or more trades you can find statistical meaning.

→ 3. Mandate loss records, one line: write cause and lesson for every loss.

Please use these as reference only.
