Dividend Yield Alone Is Risky, Check These 6 Must‑Have Dividend Metrics First

The condition is one thing only, the goal is to receive dividends consistently.

Dividend investing is fine, but what should you check first?

Retail investor: "Isn't a high dividend yield enough?"

High yield is tempting, but it is often a trap.

Dividend Yield, this is what you see first

Dividend yield means recent dividend ÷ current price (annualized).

High yield is attractive, but you must verify the reason.

Dividend yield shows how much dividend returns relative to the stock price.

Dividend Sustainability, will it be cut next year?

Check past dividend records and the dividend policy.

Confirm whether one‑time special dividends are mixed in.

Dividend policy is the company rule and frequency for making dividend decisions.

Cash Flow, is it paid from real cash?

Review operating cash flow and free cash flow.

FCF is the real cash the company earns and has left to use.

If cash is insufficient, dividends may be nominal only.

Payout Ratio, what percentage of earnings is paid?

Payout ratio is total dividends ÷ net income (ordinary).

Check whether the level is sustainable or vulnerable to earnings volatility.

Financial Health, is debt excessive?

Check debt ratio and interest coverage ratio.

High interest costs erode dividend capacity.

Debt ratio is the size of debt relative to equity.

Dividend Growth Potential, can dividends rise?

Look at past dividend increases and business growth and cash generation.

Future revenue and earnings trends must support continued dividend growth.

Retail investor: "Is there an order to check these?"

There is, and following the order saves time.

So, where to start

→ 1. Dividend yield: check the recent annualized figure once.

→ 2. Dividend sustainability: skim the last 3-5 years of dividend records.

→ 3. Cash flow: verify operating cash flow and FCF to see reality.

→ 4. Payout ratio: inspect whether payout versus earnings is abnormal.

→ 5. Financial health: check debt and interest burden to assess risk.

→ 6. Dividend growth: review whether business growth and cash generation can be maintained.

This is for reference only.
