Dividend Not Received? Check Record Date, Payment Date, and Tax in 3 Steps

Just three steps to check!!!

Do not panic if your dividend did not arrive.

If you follow the order, you will usually find the reason quickly.

Retail investor:

"Where did my dividend go?"

First, start with the order.

Where to look first?

Record date → Payment date → Withholding tax

Check in that order.

The record date is the date the right is confirmed, and the payment date is when the company actually pays out.

Dividend income tax 15.4% is a commonly used rate, but please verify the latest standard with the National Tax Service and your broker.

Record date → You must be listed on the shareholder register to have the right to the dividend, so confirm this first.

Glossary

Record date → The date the company decides only shareholders on this day will receive the dividend.

Step 1: Did I hold the shares on the record date?

Check your broker account transaction history and balance as of the record date.

If holdings are not shown, you do not have the dividend right.

Be especially careful on days with account transfers or replacement deliveries.

Step 2: Has the payment date passed? Check company disclosures

Check the payment date in company disclosures (annual report, IR) or broker notices.

If the payment date has not arrived, wait.

If the payment date has passed and there is still no deposit, contact your broker.

Step 3: Was withholding tax deducted?

Check whether the amount was reduced by withholding tax.

Account deposit may equal Dividend total − Withholding tax − Other fees.

Withholding rates vary by situation (domestic/foreign, tax treaties, etc.), so confirm the latest rules with the National Tax Service and your broker.

Glossary

Withholding tax → The system where the company deducts tax before paying the dividend.

When should you contact the broker?

Contact immediately if the payment date has passed and there is no deposit in your account.

Preparing 'proof of holding on the record date' and 'payment date disclosure' before contacting the broker speeds up processing.

If it still does not resolve, what to do?

→ Step 1: Contact the broker customer center with deposit slips and screenshots of disclosures attached.

→ Step 2: If the broker finds nothing and does not respond, consider filing complaints with Korea Securities Depository or Financial Supervisory Service.

→ Step 3: For foreign stocks, settlement and currency conversion delays may occur, so also check with the exchange or broker.

What to watch out for?

Ex-dividend date and payment date are different.

Account transfers, sales, or replacement deliveries in between can void the right itself.

Foreign stocks commonly take a few extra days due to currency conversion and deposit delays.

So, where to start

→ 1. Check your account right away to confirm you were a shareholder on the record date.

→ 2. Confirm the payment date in company disclosures or broker notices.

→ 3. If unpaid after the payment date, contact the broker, and if unresolved consider complaints to the depository or regulator.
