Higher yield looks good but it is only surface-level, and sustainability matters more.
What is dividend yield?
Dividend yield: annual yield calculated as dividend ÷ current stock price.
Dividend yield → expected return concept based on dividend relative to stock price.
What is payout ratio?

Checklist 3: Is earnings volatility large?
→ 3. Check quarterly and annual net income swings, large fluctuations are warning signs.
Checklist 4: What level is the payout ratio?
→ 4. Interpretation differs if it is 30% or 80%, a high ratio may not be conservative.
Checklist 5: Are one-off gains mixed in?
→ 5. Verify whether one-time gains (asset sales etc.) fund the dividend.
Checklist 6: What about debt ratio and interest cost?
→ 6. High debt with high dividends signals financial risk.
Checklist 7: Is dividend policy (charter/board) clear?
→ 7. Check whether the company discloses dividend guidance or policy.
Checklist 8: What are industry characteristics?
→ 8. Utilities and staples tend to have stable dividends, growth industries prioritize reinvestment.
Checklist 9: Did you review total shareholder returns?
→ 9. Consider share buybacks, special dividends, and quarterly dividends together.
Checklist 10: Any tax or regulatory constraints?
→ 10. Dividend tax rates and rules may change, confirm current standards with brokers or tax authorities.
So, where to start
→ 1. Today’s task: first check the last 3 years of operating cash flow and FCF trends.
→ 2. Next task: compare payout ratio and presence of one-off gains to assess sustainability.
→ 3. Final check: cross-check industry traits and the company’s dividend policy.
