Start with Operating Margin, 9 Financial-Statement Checks: Where to Begin?

The condition is one thing only!!! Financial statements tell company health in numbers.

Just check these 9 items and you will be much more efficient.

Retail investor:

"I do not have time to check everything, give me the core points!"

Here we go.

How is profitability?

Gross margin: the ratio after subtracting cost of goods sold from revenue.

Operating margin: look at the share earned from the core business.

A declining line here can signal weakened competitiveness.

Is cash flow healthy?

Operating cash flow: cash actually generated from operations.

FCF → the real cash left after the company earns and spends.

Without cash, good earnings can be meaningless.

Is the debt ratio safe?

Debt ratio: total debt divided by shareholder equity.

Check short-term borrowings and liquidity ratios together.

If debt grows faster than earnings, it is a warning.

What is the quality of earnings?

Revenue growth rate: assess both speed and stability of growth.

High recurring revenue (subscriptions/contracts) makes forecasting easier.

Why did margins change?

Changes in cost ratio and SG&A feed directly into margins.

Distinguish whether cost increases are temporary or structural.

Is capital expenditure excessive?

CAPEX: compare scale of CapEx with return on investment.

Excessive investment can lead to cash shortages.

What about shareholder returns?

Separate dividend payout ratio from share buybacks and special dividends.

Returns are positive, but balance with reinvestment capacity matters.

Any accounting policy changes?

Depreciation method or revenue recognition changes can alter trends.

This is why you must read the notes.

Have you checked external risks?

Look at exchange rates, commodity prices, and regulatory exposure together.

Many risks are summarized in one line.

So, where to start

→ 1. Check operating margin first on the income statement.

→ 2. Confirm operating cash flow on the cash flow statement.

→ 3. Compare current ratio and debt ratio on the balance sheet.

Use this as a reference only.
