TL;DR
- The S&P 500, Nasdaq family, Dow Jones, and Nikkei are representative market indicators with different composition criteria and calculation methods.
- Indices differ by market-cap weighting, price weighting, and sector composition, so interpretation requires care. Check the latest composition and calculation rules with the index providers.
1. Role of an Index and Calculation Methods Overview
A stock index shows the average performance of a specific market or sector. Common calculation methods include market-cap weighting, price weighting, and equal weighting, and the same period can look different depending on the method. Indices mainly serve as benchmarks, not direct investment targets.
2. Major US Indices
1) S&P 500
- A market-cap weighted benchmark that includes about 500 large and mid cap stocks. Constituents and weights change with regular inclusions and exclusions. Check the index provider for the latest composition rules.
2) Nasdaq family
- The Nasdaq Composite includes all common stocks listed on Nasdaq. With a high tech share, it often reflects growth stock trends. There are also separate market-cap based indices such as the Nasdaq 100.
3) Dow Jones Industrial Average
- Calculated as a price-weighted average of 30 large blue chip stocks. Due to price weighting, high-priced stocks carry more influence. It is one of the oldest indices.
3. Major European and Asian Indices
- UK FTSE 100: A representative large-cap index of the London market.
- Germany DAX: Includes leading German companies and has strong market-cap weighting characteristics.
- Japan Nikkei 225: A price-weighted index of 225 stocks, a traditional benchmark for the Japanese market. Constituents are adjusted periodically.
4. Other Notes
- Sector and style indices: There are separate indices for financials, tech, value, growth, and other styles.
- ETFs: Many exchange traded funds track specific indices for indirect exposure. ETF composition and management vary by product, so check the details.
- Data verification: For index composition, calculation methods, and historical changes, consult the official index providers for accuracy.
