When a Margin Shortfall Occurs, Act Within 1 Hour Using This Sequence
Condition is one thing only!!! Move within 1 hour when a margin shortfall appears.
First, calmly check your account screen.
Retail investor:
"I have a shortfall and I am panicking!"
Do not worry and follow the steps below.
What to check first?
When a shortfall occurs, first check the shortfall balance and the scheduled settlement date.
Available cash in the account: check it on the screen immediately.
Held securities: confirm whether sold stocks are still unsettled.
Settlement date (D+2 etc) varies by broker and product, so verify it in your account.
Margin shortfall means there is insufficient money until the sale proceeds settle.
Step 1: Fill it with cash immediately?
→ 1. Check pending withdrawals and available cash items in the broker app.
→ 2. Deposit the required amount via an account that allows immediate transfer (same broker instant transfer).
This is the fastest method, but transfer or processing delays are possible so confirm right away.
Step 2: Can you deliver substitute securities or arrange substitution?
Check with your broker whether substitution delivery is allowed.
Substitution delivery is inserting the same security instead of settlement funds.
Allowed securities and procedures differ by broker, so customer service confirmation is essential.
Step 3: How to reduce forced sell risk?
If immediate deposit or substitution is not possible, keep in mind the possibility of forced liquidation (buy-in).
If buy-in executes automatically, stocks may be sold at undesired prices.
Retail investor:
"What if that still does not work?"
Follow the 'what if it still fails' steps below.
If it still fails, what to do?
→ 1. Share the situation via the broker's emergency customer service and confirm the expected handling time.
→ 2. If possible, transfer immediately from another account or deposit via mobile transfer.
→ 3. Request a buy-in delay from the broker, but be aware it may be denied.
Customer service connection records serve as evidence in disputes.
How to prevent repeated shortfalls?
Regularly set a target level for maintaining available cash.
Use automatic transfers and available cash targets to reduce shortfall risk.
Many cases occur from hurried selling and buying that miss settlement timing.
What else should you verify? (Where to check)
Broker customer service and app notices: verify settlement dates and substitution delivery rules.
Financial Supervisory Service (disputes) consultation: contact point for disputes.
Rules and processing times differ by broker, so check the latest standards with your broker's customer service.
So, what to do first
→ 1. Immediately check shortfall balance and available cash in your account.
→ 2. Deposit immediately (same broker instant transfer) or ask customer service about substitution delivery.
→ 3. If still not resolved, keep customer service records, request a buy-in delay, and try transferring from another account.
