Margin Call Explained, 500,000 KRW Shortfall Example and How to Respond, Why Check Immediately?

The condition is simple!!! A margin call is a warning that your account lacks sufficient funds.

The contract terms written in the agreement serve as the legal basis.

Retail investor:

"If my account suddenly asks for more money, that feels unfair, what is the basis?"

The answer is the brokerage or futures custody agreement and its terms and conditions.

What is a margin call?

Margin call: a request triggered when an account's usable margin falls below the minimum maintenance ratio.

It is a notice to cover the shortfall and a precursor to forced liquidation.

A margin call is a warning that additional funds or collateral are required to maintain the position.

Where is the contract basis?

Contract clause: It is based on the custody agreement and margin-related terms.

The agreement specifies the responsibilities of the client, liquidation procedures, and notification methods.

Legal basis: the agreed contract is effective as a civil law agreement, and financial firms also follow supervisory regulations.

Why does a margin call matter?

One-line summary: delays can increase losses.

Failing to cover margin shortfalls in time can lead to automatic liquidation that locks in losses.

Common misunderstandings

Misunderstanding 1: "Shouldn't they call me first?"

No. If you agreed to the contract, SMS, app alerts, and automated messages all count as communication methods.

Misunderstanding 2: "They always notify me before liquidation?"

They follow the terms. Immediate notification is the principle, but system delays can occur.

Misunderstanding 3: "Can I just top up roughly?"

No. You must meet the usable margin threshold precisely.

Calculation example, hypothetical numbers

Position unrealized loss: 2,000,000 KRW

Initial margin: 10,000,000 KRW

Maintenance margin ratio: 25% (contract example)

Account total (before loss): 10,000,000 KRW

Account balance after loss: 8,000,000 KRW

Required maintenance margin: 25% of position value → assumed 2,500,000 KRW

Usable margin (actual required cash): 2,500,000 KRW

Current usable margin: account balance 8,000,000 KRW - other position margin 6,000,000 KRW (example) = 2,000,000 KRW

Shortfall: 2,500,000 KRW - 2,000,000 KRW = 500,000 KRW

In this case the margin call requests an additional deposit of 500,000 KRW.

How to respond, step by step

→ Step 1: Reconfirm the margin rules and notification methods in the contract.

→ Step 2: Calculate the shortfall and immediately deposit or provide additional collateral.

→ Step 3: If deposit is impossible, reduce position size to lower margin requirements.

→ Step 4: Notify the brokerage of the reasons and discuss liquidation timing and procedures.

Glossary: Margin → money posted to maintain a position, a margin call occurs if it is insufficient.

Retail investor:

"If I get liquidated is it over immediately?"

Liquidation proceeds automatically or manually per contract procedures, so response time is crucial.

So, what to do first

→ 1. First check the maintenance margin ratio and notification methods in the contract.

→ 2. Immediately calculate the shortfall using real-time account balance and position values.

→ 3. If you cannot deposit, reduce position size to buy time.
