Margin Loan Interest, Why It’s Just Principal×Rate×Days?

There are exactly 3 steps!!!

Margin loan interest looks complex, but you only need three numbers.

Retail investor:

"I cannot find my calculator, how much interest will I pay?"

Here it is: principal × annual rate × days ÷ 365.

3 steps to the answer (conclusion first)

1) Check the borrowed principal

2) Check the applicable annual rate

3) Multiply by actual days held and divide by the annual basis

That is all.

Annual rate means the interest percentage applied on a one-year basis.

Why only principal, rate, and days?

Interest accrues proportional to time.

Think of it as simple interest, not compound interest, for ease.

Step 1: Where to find the principal?

Check the account 'loan balance'.

If the balance changes daily, you must sum each day separately.

Step 2: How do I know my rate?

Check the 'margin loan rate' on your broker account screen or in the terms.

Rates vary by customer and time, so confirm the latest from your broker.

Step 3: Quick manual calculation

Balance × rate ÷ 365 = daily interest

Daily interest × days held = period interest

This gives a close estimate of the billed amount.

Common confusions during calculation

Settlement date basis, business days, and holidays may differ.

Interest charge timing follows broker terms, so verify them.

So what to do first

→ 1. Capture 'loan balance' and 'loan rate' from your broker account.

→ 2. If balances change, recalculate daily interest and sum by date.
