Check Account Limits Before Switching to Simple Authentication
There is one rule, confirm what you lose before switching authentication methods.
Saying you will replace a certificate with simple authentication means changing your authentication method.
Authentication controls not only login but also transfer, overseas stock trading, and high-value transaction permissions.
Retail investor: "Is it safe to switch everything because it is simpler?"
Simple authentication is convenient, but it differs in permissions, limits, and validity periods.
What is simple authentication?
Simple authentication is a fast identity check using fingerprint, PIN, or app verification.
A certificate is a personal electronic signature file used for public electronic documents and financial transactions.
Simple authentication is a phone-based quick identity verification method.
Why does it matter?
Available actions on an account depend on the authentication method.
Example: At brokerage A, the certificate may allow up to 100,000,000 won per order, while simple authentication may be limited to 10,000,000 won (this is an example).
In that case, high-value transfers or institutional transactions require the certificate.
Also, the certificate is strong for interbank and public service linkage, while simple authentication is device-based and poses greater risk if the device is lost.
Common misconception one, "Same account, so everything works"?
It does not.
Authentication requirements vary by account type.
Personal CMA and general stock accounts can mostly operate with simple authentication, but retirement pension, corporate accounts, high-value loans, and inheritance-related services often require a certificate.
Common misconception two, "Simple authentication is always insecure"?
Not necessarily.
Simple authentication balances convenience and security.
However, without security module and device authentication settings, it becomes vulnerable to phishing and device misuse.
Items to check during the switch
→ Step 1: In the brokerage app's 'Authentication Management', check current authentication method and permissions.
→ Step 2: Capture the list of services that become disabled when switching to simple authentication.
→ Step 3: Ask in advance whether you can retain the certificate or register exceptions for high-value transactions or linked services.
Example calculation (hypothetical numbers) to feel the difference in permissions
Assumption: Certificate order limit 100,000,000 won, simple authentication limit 10,000,000 won.
Situation: If you switch without knowing this, you may fail a large purchase due to limit exceedance.
Calculation: Required amount 50,000,000 won, simple authentication limit 10,000,000 won → additional authentication (certificate or brokerage customer center approval) is required.
In that case, immediately restore the certificate or follow the temporary authentication procedure for that transaction.
Fail-safe (if that still does not work)
Request 'temporary high-value transaction approval' from the brokerage customer center.
If not possible, restore the certificate or visit the desk to recover account permissions.
So, what to do first
→ 1. Today: Capture your current authentication method and each account's permissions in the app.
→ 2. Next: Verify the required authentication level for frequently used services (transfers, overseas stocks, loans).
→ 3. Final check: Note recovery procedures and contact information (brokerage customer center) in case of device loss or replacement.
