How to Judge Overheating When Turnover Value and Turnover Rate Spike Together

TL;DR

  • Turnover value is the total traded amount over a given period, turnover rate is the ratio of traded shares to float.
  • Together they reveal changes in liquidity and participation, but context and supporting indicators are required to judge overheating.

Definitions: Turnover Value and Turnover Rate

Turnover value is the sum of buy and sell amounts executed over a specific period (day, week, month). Turnover rate (traded volume relative to floating shares) is the proportion of shares traded during the same period against the number of floating shares. The two metrics show, respectively, the concentration of trading by value and the speed of share replacement.

Why it matters

A surge in turnover value signals increased market attention. A high turnover rate indicates rapid replacement of shareholders. Using both metrics together helps distinguish simple interest spikes from actual changes in the float structure. Short term moves can be distorted by specific news or algorithmic trading, so caution is warranted.

Calculation example (hypothetical numbers)

Assumption: Company A has 10,000,000 floating shares, share price 5,000 KRW.

  • If daily volume is 2,000,000 shares, turnover value = 2,000,000 × 5,000 KRW = 10,000,000,000 KRW.
  • Turnover rate (daily) = volume / floating shares = 2,000,000 / 10,000,000 = 0.2, or 20%.
  • If previous day turnover value was 2,000,000,000 KRW, then the current day represents a 5x increase in turnover value.

If both turnover value and turnover rate surge in this example, that suggests not just heightened interest but a rapid change in shareholder composition. Background checks on price moves, block trades by foreigners or institutions, and changes in float are necessary.

Common misunderstandings and cautions

  • Turnover value surge equals overheating? Not necessarily. Large trades by a single institution or options expiration can cause temporary spikes.
  • High turnover rate always means high risk? High turnover can indicate good liquidity. Short term excessive rises in turnover rate can, however, signal increased volatility.
  • What level counts as overheating? There is no absolute threshold. Compare with sector, market cap, and averages, analyze trading participants, and review news and disclosures. Check the latest standards with brokerages or tax authorities.
