Who Gets the Dividend When Shares Move Around the Record Date, and Why Check It?
There is one strict condition: dividends are paid to whoever actually had the shares remaining in their account.
Retail investor question: "I transferred before the record date, do I lose the dividend?"
The recipient who had the shares in their account receives the dividend, and the timing of the transfer (substitution delivery) and deposit/settlement processing are decisive.
First, know the judgment criteria
Order of checks: 1) registered owner (party listed as holder) 2) deposit and settlement reflection 3) broker internal processing timeline.
One-line example: what matters is who was recorded as the shareholder in the books.
Record date means the day the company finalizes who receives the dividend.
How does account transfer work
There are two transfer methods: substitution delivery (broker-to-broker transfers) and block transfers (for institutions).
Substitution delivery requires internal processing time between brokers.
Ultimately, check who held the shares in their name at the close on the record date.
The quick 3-step check (the core answer promised)
→ Step 1: Verify account balance
Confirm via trade history and balance whether the shares remained in your account on the record date.
→ Step 2: Check deposit and settlement
Query how the Korea Securities Depository (or the broker) recorded the deposit reflection time for the shares.
→ Step 3: Contact the broker and file a dispute if needed
If there is a mismatch in record date processing, contact the broker immediately and get instructions for corrections or filing a dispute.
If unresolved: prepare trade confirmations and transfer receipts and use the broker dispute resolution or KSD consultation channels.
Who benefits depending on the action?
When the sender is advantaged
- If the shares remained in the account, the registered holder secures the dividend right
- If the transfer processed after the record date, the original account owner receives the dividend
When the recipient is advantaged
- If the transfer completed before the record date and the name change was reflected, the new account owner receives the dividend
What to say when you ask the broker
Suggested query phrase: "Please confirm my account balance and the deposit reflection time as of record date XX, and please retrieve the transfer record (substitution delivery receipt)."
If requested by the broker, submit trade history captures and the transfer receipt.
So, what to do first
→ 1. First secure screenshots of your account balance and trade history.
→ 2. Immediately ask the broker customer center about deposit reflection time and dividend entitlement.
→ 3. If the result is unfavorable, file a dispute with receipts and trade history or request consultation from the Korea Securities Depository.
