Fractional Shares Fees 0.75% Example: Why Check Costs First When Starting Small in US Stocks?

The rule is simple!!! Fractional buys also carry costs.

Why should you check the cost structure before buying fractional shares of foreign stocks?

Fee: a percentage of trade amount or a fixed KRW fee

Currency cost: exchange fee or exchange spread

The actual burden is the sum of trading fee and currency cost.

Retail investor: "If I start with a small amount, do fees eat most of it?"

Starting small can create a relatively larger burden.

How are fractional buy fees applied?

Most use a percentage of the trade amount.

Some brokers charge a separate fixed KRW fee.

Example: structures like 0.25% or fixed 1,000 KRW are common.

With a percentage fee the total fee rises as investment grows, and fixed fees are disadvantageous for small amounts.

Fractional buy means splitting one whole share into partial units and buying a portion.

What names appear for currency costs?

They appear as exchange fee or exchange spread.

It is common that the broker converts currency when you place a KRW order rather than you converting directly.

Higher exchange rate discount (preferential rate) means lower cost.

Currency cost is the margin that brokers or banks add when converting KRW to foreign currency.

How to calculate actual costs when starting small?

We show the calculation with an example.

Assumption: purchase amount 10,000 KRW, trading fee 0.25%, exchange spread 0.5%, for a total cost of 0.75%.

Trading fee: 10,000 KRW × 0.25% = 25 KRW

Currency cost: 10,000 KRW × 0.5% = 50 KRW

Total cost: 25 KRW + 50 KRW = 75 KRW

Effective cost rate: 75 KRW ÷ 10,000 KRW = 0.75%

75 KRW on 10,000 KRW looks small, but it matters when returns are small.

Common misunderstandings?

Misunderstanding 1: Fractional buys are free.

They are not, trading fees and currency costs still apply.

Misunderstanding 2: Fixed fees are always better.

Fixed fees favor large amounts and disadvantage small amounts.

Misunderstanding 3: You only need to convert once.

With KRW order methods, conversion happens at each purchase so costs accumulate with frequency.

So what should you do first

→ 1. Check your broker's current fee structure (percentage/fixed) and exchange discount.

→ 2. Decide your first purchase amount and calculate the effective cost rate by adding trading fee and currency cost as in the example.

→ 3. If you plan frequent small buys, consider brokers with high exchange discounts or bundled conversion methods.
